Narrative:
On climb out of mco the right duct leak light came on. While trying to isolate the problem and accomplish the checklist, we were cleared to what I understood to be FL290. After reading back FL290, we started to climb to FL290. As we were leaving FL250 we noticed an aircraft above and to our left. At 26200' we were called by ZJX and told to level at FL260. We were then asked what altitude we were cleared to and we told them FL290. We were then told that we had only been cleared to FL260. Supplemental information from acn 143986: we were given a phone # to contact concerning a possible altitude violation. On the next ZJX frequency we were told to disregard the previous message. After landing in bos, we called the center on the given phone #. We were informed that it was a center operational error. We had been told to climb to FL250 and we read back FL290 and the controller failed to catch the error.
