Narrative:

Cleared standard dca noise abatement departure on dca 328 degree right. The clearance was copied and read back correctly, but for some reason I set the 358 degree right in the VOR window and selected VOR on the ehsi for departure navigation guidance. The departure, including the 328 degree right, was briefed prior to takeoff, but the error still was not detected. After takeoff I intercepted the 358 degree right as displayed on the ehsi. After clean up the captain asked about the 328 degree right. At this point I realized the error and started a left turn. Departure control immediately requested our heading and we responded that we were in the turn. At this point the asked us to maintain present heading and gave further climb. It is possible that our heading resulted in a violation of prohibited area P-56B. The lesson learned is an old one, don't just look at what you have set, comprehend it.

Title: ACR LGT SETS INCORRECT TRACK IN VOR FOR DCA DEP, OR....AIR CARRIER CONDUCTS SURPRISE TOUR OF WHITE HOUSE.

Narrative: CLRED STANDARD DCA NOISE ABATEMENT DEP ON DCA 328 DEG R. THE CLRNC WAS COPIED AND READ BACK CORRECTLY, BUT FOR SOME REASON I SET THE 358 DEG R IN THE VOR WINDOW AND SELECTED VOR ON THE EHSI FOR DEP NAV GUIDANCE. THE DEP, INCLUDING THE 328 DEG R, WAS BRIEFED PRIOR TO TKOF, BUT THE ERROR STILL WAS NOT DETECTED. AFTER TKOF I INTERCEPTED THE 358 DEG R AS DISPLAYED ON THE EHSI. AFTER CLEAN UP THE CAPT ASKED ABOUT THE 328 DEG R. AT THIS POINT I REALIZED THE ERROR AND STARTED A L TURN. DEP CTL IMMEDIATELY REQUESTED OUR HDG AND WE RESPONDED THAT WE WERE IN THE TURN. AT THIS POINT THE ASKED US TO MAINTAIN PRESENT HDG AND GAVE FURTHER CLB. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT OUR HDG RESULTED IN A VIOLATION OF PROHIBITED AREA P-56B. THE LESSON LEARNED IS AN OLD ONE, DON'T JUST LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE SET, COMPREHEND IT.
