Narrative:
When I was approximately 8 NM from the airport on base leg, I was cleared for the visibility approach to runway 13. I observed an aircraft on about a 1 mi final. I was told by ATC, 'cleared to land, expect 1 opp direction departure.' I widened out my approach a little, thinking the departure was probably a light aircraft that would be up and out of the way quickly. As I turned about a 5 mi final at 180 KTS, to my surprise, I heard ATC clear an large transport for an immediate takeoff on runway 31 with a right turn as soon as possible. I could see him coming straight toward us, and he turned about 1 mi away for us and 500' below us. I feel his takeoff clearance during our landing approach brought us unnecessarily close to each other an caused a potential wake turbulence hazard as well.

Title: PLT THOUGHT THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION DEP WAS UNNECESSARILY CLOSE TO HIS ACFT WHICH CAUSED A POTENTIAL WAKE TURBULENCE HAZARD.
Narrative: WHEN I WAS APPROX 8 NM FROM THE ARPT ON BASE LEG, I WAS CLRED FOR THE VIS APCH TO RWY 13. I OBSERVED AN ACFT ON ABOUT A 1 MI FINAL. I WAS TOLD BY ATC, 'CLRED TO LAND, EXPECT 1 OPP DIRECTION DEP.' I WIDENED OUT MY APCH A LITTLE, THINKING THE DEP WAS PROBABLY A LIGHT ACFT THAT WOULD BE UP AND OUT OF THE WAY QUICKLY. AS I TURNED ABOUT A 5 MI FINAL AT 180 KTS, TO MY SURPRISE, I HEARD ATC CLR AN LGT FOR AN IMMEDIATE TKOF ON RWY 31 WITH A RIGHT TURN ASAP. I COULD SEE HIM COMING STRAIGHT TOWARD US, AND HE TURNED ABOUT 1 MI AWAY FOR US AND 500' BELOW US. I FEEL HIS TKOF CLRNC DURING OUR LNDG APCH BROUGHT US UNNECESSARILY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER AN CAUSED A POTENTIAL WAKE TURB HAZARD AS WELL.
