Narrative:
Flight was being vectored for departure by ord departure. We leveled at 5000'. Ord departure requested climb from 5000 to 8000'. I read back, 'roger, flight X heavy, departing 5000' for 8000'.' upon level off at 8000', ord requested our altitude. I responded, 'level at 8000'.' ord then stated that we had not been cleared to climb. The captain and F/east both heard the 8000' climb clearance and my readback. The controller then said, 'now climb to 13000' and change to frequency.' that was the end of the incident.
