Narrative:

Flight was being vectored for departure by ord departure. We leveled at 5000'. Ord departure requested climb from 5000 to 8000'. I read back, 'roger, flight X heavy, departing 5000' for 8000'.' upon level off at 8000', ord requested our altitude. I responded, 'level at 8000'.' ord then stated that we had not been cleared to climb. The captain and F/east both heard the 8000' climb clearance and my readback. The controller then said, 'now climb to 13000' and change to frequency.' that was the end of the incident.

Narrative: FLT WAS BEING VECTORED FOR DEP BY ORD DEP. WE LEVELED AT 5000'. ORD DEP REQUESTED CLB FROM 5000 TO 8000'. I READ BACK, 'ROGER, FLT X HVY, DEPARTING 5000' FOR 8000'.' UPON LEVEL OFF AT 8000', ORD REQUESTED OUR ALT. I RESPONDED, 'LEVEL AT 8000'.' ORD THEN STATED THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED TO CLB. THE CAPT AND F/E BOTH HEARD THE 8000' CLB CLRNC AND MY READBACK. THE CTLR THEN SAID, 'NOW CLB TO 13000' AND CHANGE TO FREQ.' THAT WAS THE END OF THE INCIDENT.
