Narrative:

Operations called me on the phone with the message. I was asked to get back to them even if I took a flight delay. I deplaned and got to a phone and the message was could I continue the flight on to detroit since the next captain had called in sick. Although it was already a long day, I did not have a fatigue problem. I told operations that I could do the continuation since I could use reduced rest tomorrow and extended rest the following day west/O schedules or off-duty time conflict. In my mind there was no conflict since it was the sam flight #. I did not perceive it as a schedule since we do not receive our assignment via phone, but rather printed out up to 90 days ahead of time. I ran it by my first officer and we did not see a conflict, even though he would be relieved after the next flight segment. The new first officer had no problem with the interpretation. I saw it only as an inconvenience to me and a chance to help out in a scheduling emergency since no one else wa readily available. I felt I was safe for flight since I was not fatigued. It was a pleasant VFR flight route which I was well familiar with and I was flying with a first officer who was a good friend. The next day I was told by the captain whose place I took that I was illegal to take the flight. I told him I didn't understand, but he showed me that any flight time scheduled over 8 hours, however the means of reception, cannot be accomplished. Then I understood.
