Narrative:
While climbing out after takeoff from lga, the captain was talking on the radio and I was flying. I was turning to a heading and climbing IFR, and was involved with flying the plane. I was aware of a clearance to a higher altitude, but I did not have the altitude. I heard the captain repeat that our flight was cleared to FL220 and he set 22000 in the altitude window of the altitude alert system. I continued the climb, and as we passed 21500' the controller said that we had overshot our altitude. He then cleared us to FL220. The captain either heard the clearance wrong or the center controller gave us the wrong altitude. Center thought we were cleared to 20000'. We thought we were cleared to 22000'. This phase of flight was demanding because of the WX. I think that would be the main reason for the problem. The controller was also very busy.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT ALT OVERSHOOTS IN CLIMB.
Narrative: WHILE CLBING OUT AFTER TKOF FROM LGA, THE CAPT WAS TALKING ON THE RADIO AND I WAS FLYING. I WAS TURNING TO A HDG AND CLBING IFR, AND WAS INVOLVED WITH FLYING THE PLANE. I WAS AWARE OF A CLRNC TO A HIGHER ALT, BUT I DID NOT HAVE THE ALT. I HEARD THE CAPT REPEAT THAT OUR FLT WAS CLRED TO FL220 AND HE SET 22000 IN THE ALT WINDOW OF THE ALT ALERT SYS. I CONTINUED THE CLB, AND AS WE PASSED 21500' THE CTLR SAID THAT WE HAD OVERSHOT OUR ALT. HE THEN CLRED US TO FL220. THE CAPT EITHER HEARD THE CLRNC WRONG OR THE CENTER CTLR GAVE US THE WRONG ALT. CENTER THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 20000'. WE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 22000'. THIS PHASE OF FLT WAS DEMANDING BECAUSE OF THE WX. I THINK THAT WOULD BE THE MAIN REASON FOR THE PROB. THE CTLR WAS ALSO VERY BUSY.
