Narrative:
Cleared into W158A by ZJX. Then told to exit area via 340 degree heading. Could not comply due to thunderstorms in area. Advised by controller only option to squawk 7700--did so. Approximately 5 mins later area was no longer hot and could maintain heading normal squawk. I questioned the controllers as to what was going on. According to them, when we entered the respective areas they were cold. After we were in them they became hot.
