Narrative:

We had just completed the before 'takeoff checklist' and were cleared to cross runway 27L. We then switched to the tower frequency and were cleared into position and hold. My first officer acknowledged and then went to PA to brief the passengers. He then returned to the tower frequency with me and we completed the 'line-up checklist'. I somehow thought we were cleared for takeoff and called for speeds and lights and started to advance power. We rolled approximately 50-100' and tower said, 'XXXX hold your position.' I immediately stopped the aircraft. In this situation I can blame no one but myself. However, I can attribute my lack of awareness to a number factors that weighed heavily on my mind at the time. My #1 concern at the time was the line of thunderstorms that had just passed the airport during the past half hour and it was this same line that we were going to have to navigate around twice during the next 3 hours. In fact, we had just made our way through it on a previous flight. As we taxied, I kept looking to the east at the WX while trying to paint it on the radar before departure. I was becoming too preoccuppied apparently. Secondly, I had become very aggravated with my first officer. This was my second month flying with him and his performance had made my job more difficult than it would be flying alone. The company was aware of his incompetence and his reputation preceded him. I was constantly telling him to watch altitude, headings and other duties required of him an PNF. He required almost my full attention and he was never there to check up on me to make sure I didn't miss something, the purpose of a two pilot crew. Needless to say, our communication and coordination were limited and had it been more open and resourceful this occurrence may have been prevented. I am in no position to call someone else incompetent but, a crew member who is consistently way behind the airplane is more stressful to work with than the biggest line of thunderstorms. I take pride in doing my job well and by the checklist. This error hurts my pride and at the same time is very frightening. I'm grateful to the controller for being on the ball. I've learned a lot and have become as vigilant as I can be to prevent anything like this again.

Title: COMMUTER SMT START OF UNAUTH TKOF. TWR INTERVENED AND FLT CREW ABORTED THE TKOF.

Narrative: WE HAD JUST COMPLETED THE BEFORE 'TKOF CHKLIST' AND WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 27L. WE THEN SWITCHED TO THE TWR FREQ AND WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. MY F/O ACKNOWLEDGED AND THEN WENT TO PA TO BRIEF THE PAXS. HE THEN RETURNED TO THE TWR FREQ WITH ME AND WE COMPLETED THE 'LINE-UP CHKLIST'. I SOMEHOW THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF AND CALLED FOR SPDS AND LIGHTS AND STARTED TO ADVANCE PWR. WE ROLLED APPROX 50-100' AND TWR SAID, 'XXXX HOLD YOUR POS.' I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT. IN THIS SITUATION I CAN BLAME NO ONE BUT MYSELF. HOWEVER, I CAN ATTRIBUTE MY LACK OF AWARENESS TO A NUMBER FACTORS THAT WEIGHED HEAVILY ON MY MIND AT THE TIME. MY #1 CONCERN AT THE TIME WAS THE LINE OF TSTMS THAT HAD JUST PASSED THE ARPT DURING THE PAST HALF HR AND IT WAS THIS SAME LINE THAT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TO NAVIGATE AROUND TWICE DURING THE NEXT 3 HRS. IN FACT, WE HAD JUST MADE OUR WAY THROUGH IT ON A PREVIOUS FLT. AS WE TAXIED, I KEPT LOOKING TO THE E AT THE WX WHILE TRYING TO PAINT IT ON THE RADAR BEFORE DEP. I WAS BECOMING TOO PREOCCUPPIED APPARENTLY. SECONDLY, I HAD BECOME VERY AGGRAVATED WITH MY F/O. THIS WAS MY SECOND MONTH FLYING WITH HIM AND HIS PERFORMANCE HAD MADE MY JOB MORE DIFFICULT THAN IT WOULD BE FLYING ALONE. THE COMPANY WAS AWARE OF HIS INCOMPETENCE AND HIS REPUTATION PRECEDED HIM. I WAS CONSTANTLY TELLING HIM TO WATCH ALT, HDGS AND OTHER DUTIES REQUIRED OF HIM AN PNF. HE REQUIRED ALMOST MY FULL ATTN AND HE WAS NEVER THERE TO CHK UP ON ME TO MAKE SURE I DIDN'T MISS SOMETHING, THE PURPOSE OF A TWO PLT CREW. NEEDLESS TO SAY, OUR COM AND COORD WERE LIMITED AND HAD IT BEEN MORE OPEN AND RESOURCEFUL THIS OCCURRENCE MAY HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. I AM IN NO POS TO CALL SOMEONE ELSE INCOMPETENT BUT, A CREW MEMBER WHO IS CONSISTENTLY WAY BEHIND THE AIRPLANE IS MORE STRESSFUL TO WORK WITH THAN THE BIGGEST LINE OF TSTMS. I TAKE PRIDE IN DOING MY JOB WELL AND BY THE CHKLIST. THIS ERROR HURTS MY PRIDE AND AT THE SAME TIME IS VERY FRIGHTENING. I'M GRATEFUL TO THE CTLR FOR BEING ON THE BALL. I'VE LEARNED A LOT AND HAVE BECOME AS VIGILANT AS I CAN BE TO PREVENT ANYTHING LIKE THIS AGAIN.
