Narrative:
Heavy thunderstorm with lightning were over la guardia and visibility was down to one mi. Our flight had been cleared to taxi out taxiway foxtrot hold short of runway 22 for landing traffic and eventually proceed to runway 13 for takeoff. Approaching runway 22, we had difficulty seeing the hold short line on taxiway foxtrot. Just as we saw what appeared to be a faded hold short line and began braking, the ground controller came on the radio and reminded us to hold short of runway 22. The captain forcefully applied the brakes and we stopped immediately. We would have stopped short of runway 22 in any event, but the controller's timely reminder insured we would not foul the runway. We believe lga needs to repaint the hold short lines and ensure the taxiway lights and hold short lights are operating properly and are clearly visible to flight crewmen in bad WX conditions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF LGT TAXIING ON TXWY F AT LGA WERE UNABLE TO SEE THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 22. GND CTLR ALERTED THE FLT CREW AND HOLD SHORT WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
Narrative: HEAVY TSTM WITH LIGHTNING WERE OVER LA GUARDIA AND VISIBILITY WAS DOWN TO ONE MI. OUR FLT HAD BEEN CLRED TO TAXI OUT TXWY FOXTROT HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22 FOR LNDG TFC AND EVENTUALLY PROCEED TO RWY 13 FOR TKOF. APCHING RWY 22, WE HAD DIFFICULTY SEEING THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON TXWY FOXTROT. JUST AS WE SAW WHAT APPEARED TO BE A FADED HOLD SHORT LINE AND BEGAN BRAKING, THE GND CTLR CAME ON THE RADIO AND REMINDED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22. THE CAPT FORCEFULLY APPLIED THE BRAKES AND WE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. WE WOULD HAVE STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 22 IN ANY EVENT, BUT THE CTLR'S TIMELY REMINDER INSURED WE WOULD NOT FOUL THE RWY. WE BELIEVE LGA NEEDS TO REPAINT THE HOLD SHORT LINES AND ENSURE THE TXWY LIGHTS AND HOLD SHORT LIGHTS ARE OPERATING PROPERLY AND ARE CLRLY VISIBLE TO FLT CREWMEN IN BAD WX CONDITIONS.
