Narrative:

The initial clearance was to taxi to R2. During taxi to runway 23L crew felt we were reclred all the way including taxi across runway 23R which was being used for landing. No traffic was observed as we approached runway 23R and we continued across runway 25, we felt the clearance was to runway 23L. Both pilots felt the clearance was to the departure runway. Ground cleared us (as I heard/understood it) to runway 23L via R2 to R3 to contact tower when reaching runway 23L. After crossing runway 23R ground advised us we made a 'very bad mistake' by crossing an active runway. The french controller was difficult to understand and with some different terminology (line up and wait, taxi to holding point runway?) that often is experienced in countries outside the USA. In retrospect, I would ask for 'reclrnc' prior to crossing any runway that potentially could be active.

Title: CPR MLG UNAUTH RWY CROSSING AT LFMN FO.

Narrative: THE INITIAL CLRNC WAS TO TAXI TO R2. DURING TAXI TO RWY 23L CREW FELT WE WERE RECLRED ALL THE WAY INCLUDING TAXI ACROSS RWY 23R WHICH WAS BEING USED FOR LNDG. NO TFC WAS OBSERVED AS WE APCHED RWY 23R AND WE CONTINUED ACROSS RWY 25, WE FELT THE CLRNC WAS TO RWY 23L. BOTH PLTS FELT THE CLRNC WAS TO THE DEP RWY. GND CLRED US (AS I HEARD/UNDERSTOOD IT) TO RWY 23L VIA R2 TO R3 TO CONTACT TWR WHEN REACHING RWY 23L. AFTER XING RWY 23R GND ADVISED US WE MADE A 'VERY BAD MISTAKE' BY XING AN ACTIVE RWY. THE FRENCH CTLR WAS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AND WITH SOME DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGY (LINE UP AND WAIT, TAXI TO HOLDING POINT RWY?) THAT OFTEN IS EXPERIENCED IN COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE USA. IN RETROSPECT, I WOULD ASK FOR 'RECLRNC' PRIOR TO XING ANY RWY THAT POTENTIALLY COULD BE ACTIVE.
