Narrative:
On call to ground clearance issued to 'taxi to runway 23R.' previous nights we taxied via runway 32 and taxiway a to 23R so I went that way again this night. Aircraft behind me queried the controller and were told to taxi via taxiway B and a to runway 23. I asked controller if we had misunderstood the clearance and were told the clearance was to us B and a, but that using 32 was 'no problem.' that next night after this occurrence, all aircraft were cleared to 'taxi to runway 23R' and all aircraft were using runway 32 again. Inconsistency of specific clearance instructions led to confusion and I failed to question the different clearance. Supplemental information from acn 146962: the following night we received the same instructions of 'taxi to 23R' with no specifics as to which txwys to use. However, this time we questioned our route before beginning our taxi, and we were then instructed to 'taxi via beau and alpha.' an important factor is that runway 32 has been closed for a few months and the standard taxi route from ramp is via runway 32 and alpha. Having not flown into ind in 3 weeks, we also assumed that taxi route to be the same.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AIR CARGO FLT CREW MISINTERPRETS TAXI CLRNC, ENTERS AND TAXIS ON RWY INSTEAD OF PARALLEL TXWY.
Narrative: ON CALL TO GND CLRNC ISSUED TO 'TAXI TO RWY 23R.' PREVIOUS NIGHTS WE TAXIED VIA RWY 32 AND TXWY A TO 23R SO I WENT THAT WAY AGAIN THIS NIGHT. ACFT BEHIND ME QUERIED THE CTLR AND WERE TOLD TO TAXI VIA TXWY B AND A TO RWY 23. I ASKED CTLR IF WE HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC AND WERE TOLD THE CLRNC WAS TO US B AND A, BUT THAT USING 32 WAS 'NO PROB.' THAT NEXT NIGHT AFTER THIS OCCURRENCE, ALL ACFT WERE CLRED TO 'TAXI TO RWY 23R' AND ALL ACFT WERE USING RWY 32 AGAIN. INCONSISTENCY OF SPECIFIC CLRNC INSTRUCTIONS LED TO CONFUSION AND I FAILED TO QUESTION THE DIFFERENT CLRNC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 146962: THE FOLLOWING NIGHT WE RECEIVED THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS OF 'TAXI TO 23R' WITH NO SPECIFICS AS TO WHICH TXWYS TO USE. HOWEVER, THIS TIME WE QUESTIONED OUR RTE BEFORE BEGINNING OUR TAXI, AND WE WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO 'TAXI VIA BEAU AND ALPHA.' AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THAT RWY 32 HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR A FEW MONTHS AND THE STANDARD TAXI RTE FROM RAMP IS VIA RWY 32 AND ALPHA. HAVING NOT FLOWN INTO IND IN 3 WKS, WE ALSO ASSUMED THAT TAXI RTE TO BE THE SAME.
