Narrative:
A thunderstorm avoidance route was requested from our in house support staff. This route was built and loaded into the flight planning computer. Unfortunately I did not read the complete route prior to dispatch release. This resulted in a domestic equipped aircraft flying a segment over water more than 50 mi from a shoreline. No corrective action was taken since it was not noted until the aircraft was already half way across the water segment, and continuation to gri was just as close as the nearest shoreline. The aircraft did attempt to contact dispatch during this time but no communications were established. I have had this route removed from my flight planning computer.
