Narrative:
Was approximately 53 mi south of cle. Akron approach cleared direct ritzs from present position, RNAV direct cle. PIC looking at chart sees/reads intersection and proceeded RNAV direct reads mistaking that intersection for ritzs. This situation could have been avoided by having a heading assigned with the clearance to the intersection or, not having closely named intxns within the same relative proximity of each other. Also the phonetic spelling would have helped had it been given with the clearance. Within the cleveland approach transitions there is ritz intersection, 170 degree, 25 NM from cle. Reads intersection, 210 degree, 45 NM from cle. Reels intersection, 260 degree, 58 NM from cle. This can tend to lead to confusion with amended root clrncs while airborne.
