Narrative:

After performing my pretkof checklist, still at hyde field airport,, I contacted adw tower informing them, 'I'm at hyde ready for takeoff, destination bay bridge airport,' and requested the clearance. Adw tower responded, instructing me to stay west of field, and to climb and maintain 1400'. My understanding of staying west of field was west of adw runways, so after takeoff I proceeded toward adw when tower contacted me again asking for my location. I responded to him, but I could not seem to transmit. I switched radio channels to 1 & 2 to no avail, until I was nearing adw tower. I could receive, but could not transmit. I heard tower instruct me to fly direct to bay bridge as I crossed midfield toward my destination and maintained 1400' MSL. I have been through TCA's before and to my knowledge, approach control will mention to you to remain clear of TCA, squawk code, identify, etc only until radar contact with a clearance is given. In this case, I was not informed to remain clear of TCA, was not given a squawk code and was instructed only to stay west of field, climb and maintain 1400'. I think when they saw stay west of field, they should clarify which field they are pertaining to. I have reported the radio problem to the FBO. I think clarifying and being specific would lessen radio congestion and prevent assumptions. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states he was mostly concerned because he had no code to squawk and never officially received a clearance. Returned by circumnaving the TCA due to his radio problems. It was a clear day and the tower had him in sight the entire time.

Title: SMA DEPARTS UNCONTROLLED ARPT AFTER CONTACTING TWR OF ARPT WITHIN THE TCA FOR CLRNC THROUGH TCA. AFTER DEP HAS TRANSMITTER PROBLEM AND CAN ONLY RECEIVE.

Narrative: AFTER PERFORMING MY PRETKOF CHKLIST, STILL AT HYDE FIELD ARPT,, I CONTACTED ADW TWR INFORMING THEM, 'I'M AT HYDE READY FOR TKOF, DEST BAY BRIDGE ARPT,' AND REQUESTED THE CLRNC. ADW TWR RESPONDED, INSTRUCTING ME TO STAY W OF FIELD, AND TO CLB AND MAINTAIN 1400'. MY UNDERSTANDING OF STAYING W OF FIELD WAS W OF ADW RWYS, SO AFTER TKOF I PROCEEDED TOWARD ADW WHEN TWR CONTACTED ME AGAIN ASKING FOR MY LOCATION. I RESPONDED TO HIM, BUT I COULD NOT SEEM TO XMIT. I SWITCHED RADIO CHANNELS TO 1 & 2 TO NO AVAIL, UNTIL I WAS NEARING ADW TWR. I COULD RECEIVE, BUT COULD NOT XMIT. I HEARD TWR INSTRUCT ME TO FLY DIRECT TO BAY BRIDGE AS I CROSSED MIDFIELD TOWARD MY DEST AND MAINTAINED 1400' MSL. I HAVE BEEN THROUGH TCA'S BEFORE AND TO MY KNOWLEDGE, APCH CTL WILL MENTION TO YOU TO REMAIN CLR OF TCA, SQUAWK CODE, IDENT, ETC ONLY UNTIL RADAR CONTACT WITH A CLRNC IS GIVEN. IN THIS CASE, I WAS NOT INFORMED TO REMAIN CLR OF TCA, WAS NOT GIVEN A SQUAWK CODE AND WAS INSTRUCTED ONLY TO STAY W OF FIELD, CLB AND MAINTAIN 1400'. I THINK WHEN THEY SAW STAY W OF FIELD, THEY SHOULD CLARIFY WHICH FIELD THEY ARE PERTAINING TO. I HAVE RPTED THE RADIO PROB TO THE FBO. I THINK CLARIFYING AND BEING SPECIFIC WOULD LESSEN RADIO CONGESTION AND PREVENT ASSUMPTIONS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR STATES HE WAS MOSTLY CONCERNED BECAUSE HE HAD NO CODE TO SQUAWK AND NEVER OFFICIALLY RECEIVED A CLRNC. RETURNED BY CIRCUMNAVING THE TCA DUE TO HIS RADIO PROBLEMS. IT WAS A CLEAR DAY AND THE TWR HAD HIM IN SIGHT THE ENTIRE TIME.
