Narrative:
Our flight was departing dca on runway 36. We were told by tower to stay on the noise abatement departure over the river. As we departed to the north, ATC told us to get over the river so we made a slight right turn to get over the river. As we were turning back to the northwest, ATC told us to turn left to a heading. Then they told us to expedite the turn. They told us to get over the river and stay over the river. We advised ATC that we couldn't see the river when we are directly over the river and passing through clouds. As we finished the ATC assigned turn to the northwest, the controller told us that we were now clear of prohibited airspace. Supplemental information from acn 147531. He said to expedite the turn about the same time I did the 30 degree of turn so I cranked in some more turn and rolled out about 280 degree. He then advised me I was clear of prohibited airspace. Then he asked my heading, said to turn right and follow the river. I told him it was difficult to see the river flying in a cloud. We had passed cloud at lower altitude, obscuring view of river but most of the problem was being over the river and so high.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CORPORATE JET ENTERS PROHIBITED AREA P65 ON DEP AT DCA.
Narrative: OUR FLT WAS DEPARTING DCA ON RWY 36. WE WERE TOLD BY TWR TO STAY ON THE NOISE ABATEMENT DEP OVER THE RIVER. AS WE DEPARTED TO THE N, ATC TOLD US TO GET OVER THE RIVER SO WE MADE A SLIGHT R TURN TO GET OVER THE RIVER. AS WE WERE TURNING BACK TO THE NW, ATC TOLD US TO TURN L TO A HDG. AS WE FINISHED THE ATC ASSIGNED TURN TO THE NW, THE CTLR TOLD US THAT WE WERE NOW CLR OF PROHIBITED AIRSPACE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 147531. HE SAID TO EXPEDITE THE TURN ABOUT THE SAME TIME I DID THE 30 DEG OF TURN SO I CRANKED IN SOME MORE TURN AND ROLLED OUT ABOUT 280 DEG. HE THEN ADVISED ME I WAS CLR OF PROHIBITED AIRSPACE. THEN HE ASKED MY HDG, SAID TO TURN R AND FOLLOW THE RIVER. I TOLD HIM IT WAS DIFFICULT TO SEE THE RIVER FLYING IN A CLOUD. WE HAD PASSED CLOUD AT LOWER ALT, OBSCURING VIEW OF RIVER BUT MOST OF THE PROB WAS BEING OVER THE RIVER AND SO HIGH.
