Narrative:
Approximately 20 mm south of lga at 3500 ft we encountered what appeared to be a drone. We noticed it at our 1 o'clock and slightly low and it passed immediately off our right wing. We were unsure of its identity at first; but the first officer reported that just before we were abeam it; it made an immediate turn to the east away from us. We reported to ATC without delay and they handed us off to the next frequency.
