Narrative:
I flew to seneca falls airport from lancaster, ny at XA00 hours. I landed normally and 2 1/2 hours later realized that the airport was closed. The runway (36) was intact and clear, but construction was evident along sides. The lack of a windsock and barricades at the end of runway led to distrs in such that I failed to notice the 'X' at end of runway. An left NOTAM was issued for the closing, but upon calling buf FSS I found no mention of NOTAMS for seneca falls. I was informed by seneca falls airport officials the several other pilots had landed in the previous several weeks since the airport was closed. I think a local NOTAM was insufficient in this type of situation and perhaps placing the 'X' further from the end of the runway would make them more visible and noticeable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LOW TIME PLT OF SMA LANDS AT A CLOSED ARPT.
Narrative: I FLEW TO SENECA FALLS ARPT FROM LANCASTER, NY AT XA00 HRS. I LANDED NORMALLY AND 2 1/2 HRS LATER REALIZED THAT THE ARPT WAS CLOSED. THE RWY (36) WAS INTACT AND CLR, BUT CONSTRUCTION WAS EVIDENT ALONG SIDES. THE LACK OF A WINDSOCK AND BARRICADES AT THE END OF RWY LED TO DISTRS IN SUCH THAT I FAILED TO NOTICE THE 'X' AT END OF RWY. AN L NOTAM WAS ISSUED FOR THE CLOSING, BUT UPON CALLING BUF FSS I FOUND NO MENTION OF NOTAMS FOR SENECA FALLS. I WAS INFORMED BY SENECA FALLS ARPT OFFICIALS THE SEVERAL OTHER PLTS HAD LANDED IN THE PREVIOUS SEVERAL WKS SINCE THE ARPT WAS CLOSED. I THINK A LCL NOTAM WAS INSUFFICIENT IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION AND PERHAPS PLACING THE 'X' FURTHER FROM THE END OF THE RWY WOULD MAKE THEM MORE VISIBLE AND NOTICEABLE.
