Narrative:
On sat, june/1990 there was a special interest activity held at the columbia, ca, airport. I planned to attend in an aircraft. West/O a communication radio so I called the phone number published for information regarding the event and was advised that non-radio equipped aircraft were welcome, but, that the field would be closed 'from aa:00 until ab:00 pm' for a model airplane flight demonstration, so I planned to arrive after ab:00. The WX was cavu and about 5 mi from the field I observed an aircraft landing at approximately ab:00. At approximately ab:05 I entered a normal traffic pattern, landed uneventfully, and was directed to a parking spot by flagmen. After shut-down a fly-in official informed me that I had landed on a closed runway. The model plane demonstration was being held from xx until xy pm. In this casethere was obviously an error made in communicating the correct time during which the field would be closed, such things happen wherever people are involved. I would like to suggest an effective solution. Whenever uncontrolled fields are closed for flight demos, a temporary 'X' could be marked on the runway with a limeroller in the same manner as yard lines are marked on a football field. Such markings would be highly visible during the brief time that the field is closed and would be easily removeable when the field opens.

Title: NORDO SMA LANDS ON RWY CLOSED FOR ONE HOUR FOR SPECIAL INTEREST EVENT AT NONTWR ARPT.
Narrative: ON SAT, JUNE/1990 THERE WAS A SPECIAL INTEREST ACTIVITY HELD AT THE COLUMBIA, CA, ARPT. I PLANNED TO ATTEND IN AN ACFT. W/O A COM RADIO SO I CALLED THE PHONE NUMBER PUBLISHED FOR INFO REGARDING THE EVENT AND WAS ADVISED THAT NON-RADIO EQUIPPED ACFT WERE WELCOME, BUT, THAT THE FIELD WOULD BE CLOSED 'FROM AA:00 UNTIL AB:00 PM' FOR A MODEL AIRPLANE FLT DEMO, SO I PLANNED TO ARRIVE AFTER AB:00. THE WX WAS CAVU AND ABOUT 5 MI FROM THE FIELD I OBSERVED AN ACFT LNDG AT APPROX AB:00. AT APPROX AB:05 I ENTERED A NORMAL TFC PATTERN, LANDED UNEVENTFULLY, AND WAS DIRECTED TO A PARKING SPOT BY FLAGMEN. AFTER SHUT-DOWN A FLY-IN OFFICIAL INFORMED ME THAT I HAD LANDED ON A CLOSED RWY. THE MODEL PLANE DEMO WAS BEING HELD FROM XX UNTIL XY PM. WHENEVER UNCTLED FIELDS ARE CLOSED FOR FLT DEMOS, A TEMPORARY 'X' COULD BE MARKED ON THE RWY WITH A LIMEROLLER IN THE SAME MANNER AS YARD LINES ARE MARKED ON A FOOTBALL FIELD. SUCH MARKINGS WOULD BE HIGHLY VISIBLE DURING THE BRIEF TIME THAT THE FIELD IS CLOSED AND WOULD BE EASILY REMOVEABLE WHEN THE FIELD OPENS.
