Narrative:
Calm conditions, normal main wheel T/D, 20 degree flaps, plane veered sharply to the right when nose wheel lowered, ran off runway, regained control and stopped on parallel taxiway. Contacted ground, normal taxi to ramp. Touch and goes next day plus thorough inspection of aircraft landing gear and controls revealed no evidence of problems. Passenger in right seat denies any action during landing and rollout, however, the only way the nose wheel could have been set to the right is if passenger inadvertently touched the right rudder pedal after T/D before nose wheel was lowered. Pilot did not notice such an occurrence, but it could have been momentary at the instant the nose wheel dropped to the runway. Passengers will be cautioned in the future.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA RWY EXCURSION ON LNDG.
Narrative: CALM CONDITIONS, NORMAL MAIN WHEEL T/D, 20 DEG FLAPS, PLANE VEERED SHARPLY TO THE R WHEN NOSE WHEEL LOWERED, RAN OFF RWY, REGAINED CTL AND STOPPED ON PARALLEL TXWY. CONTACTED GND, NORMAL TAXI TO RAMP. TOUCH AND GOES NEXT DAY PLUS THOROUGH INSPECTION OF ACFT LNDG GEAR AND CTLS REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF PROBS. PAX IN R SEAT DENIES ANY ACTION DURING LNDG AND ROLLOUT, HOWEVER, THE ONLY WAY THE NOSE WHEEL COULD HAVE BEEN SET TO THE R IS IF PAX INADVERTENTLY TOUCHED THE R RUDDER PEDAL AFTER T/D BEFORE NOSE WHEEL WAS LOWERED. PLT DID NOT NOTICE SUCH AN OCCURRENCE, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN MOMENTARY AT THE INSTANT THE NOSE WHEEL DROPPED TO THE RWY. PAXS WILL BE CAUTIONED IN THE FUTURE.
