Narrative:
Our clearance read, cleared to fsm via loupe seven departure to lin J-84 mina...etc, maintain FL230 expect FL370 in ten mins etc. After departure we climbed through the crossing restriction which was to maintain at or below 5000' until crossing the 0470 right of sjc. (We took off on runway 30L). Upon contacting the phone number given to us supervisor said we were not the first, in fact, we were #2 that day and #6 that month (it was only the 18TH). He also said they were 'looking for a cure.' as a suggestion I personally can say that when the clearance read 'cleared to FL230' it resulted in me forgetting all about the crossing restriction. I believe if the tower would have assigned us 5000' as he cleared us for takeoff it would have kept us from the deviation. Also the SID is so cluttered that it didn't help, especially for such an unusual and complex SID. I goofed, but since the goal is safety I believe the towers instructions to maintain 5000' would make the skies safer.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALT DEVIATION TO MISINTERP OF SID.
Narrative: OUR CLRNC READ, CLRED TO FSM VIA LOUPE SEVEN DEP TO LIN J-84 MINA...ETC, MAINTAIN FL230 EXPECT FL370 IN TEN MINS ETC. AFTER DEP WE CLBED THROUGH THE XING RESTRICTION WHICH WAS TO MAINTAIN AT OR BELOW 5000' UNTIL XING THE 0470 R OF SJC. (WE TOOK OFF ON RWY 30L). UPON CONTACTING THE PHONE NUMBER GIVEN TO US SUPVR SAID WE WERE NOT THE FIRST, IN FACT, WE WERE #2 THAT DAY AND #6 THAT MONTH (IT WAS ONLY THE 18TH). HE ALSO SAID THEY WERE 'LOOKING FOR A CURE.' AS A SUGGESTION I PERSONALLY CAN SAY THAT WHEN THE CLRNC READ 'CLRED TO FL230' IT RESULTED IN ME FORGETTING ALL ABOUT THE XING RESTRICTION. I BELIEVE IF THE TWR WOULD HAVE ASSIGNED US 5000' AS HE CLRED US FOR TKOF IT WOULD HAVE KEPT US FROM THE DEV. ALSO THE SID IS SO CLUTTERED THAT IT DIDN'T HELP, ESPECIALLY FOR SUCH AN UNUSUAL AND COMPLEX SID. I GOOFED, BUT SINCE THE GOAL IS SAFETY I BELIEVE THE TWRS INSTRUCTIONS TO MAINTAIN 5000' WOULD MAKE THE SKIES SAFER.
