Narrative:
On a very hot summer day in den we were holding for departure clearance. ATC was very busy, clearing numerous departures for takeoff on 17L and 17R. On 1 tower frequency we were cleared into position and hold on 17L. An air carrier mdt Y was cleared for takeoff on 17L just in front of us. The mdt Y had just rotated as we received takeoff clearance from the tower. The first officer read back our takeoff clearance. I released the brakes and began rolling forward slowly. As I started to bringing the power up, I noticed we were too close to the mdt Y. I said to the first officer, 'we are too close behind the mdt Y, we will overtake him; verify our takeoff clearance.' by this time we had rolled slowly about 600' down the runway. The tower came back and told us to hold in position. We told the tower that we had rolled too far down the runway and would like to return to the departure end. We needed the full length because of our weight. Tower said 'roger, taxi back to the end.' as we taxied back I told the tower that we had received our takeoff clearance and the first officer read the clearance back in full. The tower said 'yes, I apologize.'

Title: ACR MLG ABORTS TKOF DUE PROX OF PREVOIUS DEP.
Narrative: ON A VERY HOT SUMMER DAY IN DEN WE WERE HOLDING FOR DEP CLRNC. ATC WAS VERY BUSY, CLRING NUMEROUS DEPS FOR TKOF ON 17L AND 17R. ON 1 TWR FREQ WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD ON 17L. AN ACR MDT Y WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON 17L JUST IN FRONT OF US. THE MDT Y HAD JUST ROTATED AS WE RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC FROM THE TWR. THE F/O READ BACK OUR TKOF CLRNC. I RELEASED THE BRAKES AND BEGAN ROLLING FORWARD SLOWLY. AS I STARTED TO BRINGING THE PWR UP, I NOTICED WE WERE TOO CLOSE TO THE MDT Y. I SAID TO THE F/O, 'WE ARE TOO CLOSE BEHIND THE MDT Y, WE WILL OVERTAKE HIM; VERIFY OUR TKOF CLRNC.' BY THIS TIME WE HAD ROLLED SLOWLY ABOUT 600' DOWN THE RWY. THE TWR CAME BACK AND TOLD US TO HOLD IN POS. WE TOLD THE TWR THAT WE HAD ROLLED TOO FAR DOWN THE RWY AND WOULD LIKE TO RETURN TO THE DEP END. WE NEEDED THE FULL LENGTH BECAUSE OF OUR WT. TWR SAID 'ROGER, TAXI BACK TO THE END.' AS WE TAXIED BACK I TOLD THE TWR THAT WE HAD RECEIVED OUR TKOF CLRNC AND THE F/O READ THE CLRNC BACK IN FULL. THE TWR SAID 'YES, I APOLOGIZE.'
