Narrative:
I have twice taxied with towbar attached. In both cases I preflted the aircraft and then did another task; when returning I knew I had preflted the aircraft and so I just got in and took off. The first time another pilot called to my attention the error. On the incident I'm reporting I took off and 3-4' off ground I heard a 'chink' and not knowing what happened I requested a 'fly by' the tower. They said gear was down and okay so I did another 'fly by' to retract the gear, again the tower said it was okay. I then departed. When returning home several days later I discovered the missing towbar in the hangar and realized then what I had done. I hope you can print this so some other pilots might avoid this type of oversight. I have added this to my 'before starting engine' checklist.
