Narrative:
At 6;000 ft 3 miles out my engine started running very rough. I informed the tower I was returning to the airport; abeam the end of [the runway] on a left downwind for the active runway; my engine quit. I advised the tower I was turning left for a 270 deg turn to land on. Landing half way down the runway I turned off clearing the runway onto the taxiway.
