Narrative:
Prior to landing at chs we copied the ATIS NOTAM 'taxiway a closed between taxiway 3 and taxiway 2.' after landing on runway 33, tower instructed an exit to the right on taxiway 1 and contact ground. On taxiway 1 we could see men and equipment on the northern most part of taxiway a. The problem arose with our taxi clearance. Seeing the construction on the other side of runway 21, I understood our clearance to be taxi on runway 21 hold short of runway 33, which I did. Ground control said the clearance was cross runway 21, taxi on taxiway 2 hold short of runway 33. This was a case of my eyes not believing what my ears heard. First, from the chart, taxiway 2 didn't start until the southeast corner of the field and wasn't anywhere near runway 21 and secondly, the taxiway appeared obstructed by men and equipment. Additionally, it appears from the chart that taxiway 2 doesn't intersect a. Although no traffic conflict occurred, I called the tower supervisor to clear up the taxiway identify confusion. I was told taxiway 2 runs from the approach end of runway 33 to the approach end of runway 21. Part of that is clearly marked taxiway 1 on the chart.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AFTER LNDG AT CHS FLC OF MLG TAXIED ON WRONG TXWY.
Narrative: PRIOR TO LNDG AT CHS WE COPIED THE ATIS NOTAM 'TXWY A CLOSED BTWN TXWY 3 AND TXWY 2.' AFTER LNDG ON RWY 33, TWR INSTRUCTED AN EXIT TO THE R ON TXWY 1 AND CONTACT GND. ON TXWY 1 WE COULD SEE MEN AND EQUIP ON THE NORTHERN MOST PART OF TXWY A. THE PROB AROSE WITH OUR TAXI CLRNC. SEEING THE CONSTRUCTION ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 21, I UNDERSTOOD OUR CLRNC TO BE TAXI ON RWY 21 HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33, WHICH I DID. GND CTL SAID THE CLRNC WAS CROSS RWY 21, TAXI ON TXWY 2 HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33. THIS WAS A CASE OF MY EYES NOT BELIEVING WHAT MY EARS HEARD. FIRST, FROM THE CHART, TXWY 2 DIDN'T START UNTIL THE SE CORNER OF THE FIELD AND WASN'T ANYWHERE NEAR RWY 21 AND SECONDLY, THE TXWY APPEARED OBSTRUCTED BY MEN AND EQUIP. ADDITIONALLY, IT APPEARS FROM THE CHART THAT TXWY 2 DOESN'T INTERSECT A. ALTHOUGH NO TFC CONFLICT OCCURRED, I CALLED THE TWR SUPVR TO CLR UP THE TXWY IDENT CONFUSION. I WAS TOLD TXWY 2 RUNS FROM THE APCH END OF RWY 33 TO THE APCH END OF RWY 21. PART OF THAT IS CLRLY MARKED TXWY 1 ON THE CHART.
