Narrative:
At FL240 and about 15 miles north of wlace I received a clearance to descend to cross wlace at FL190; however at the time of the clearance the FMS switched to the next waypoint which was prrie. I informed the controller that I was past wlace; the airplane was in the smart turn; in which he questioned me about the move as he said I was 15 mile north of wlace and wanted me to cross wlace at FL190. I switched to heading mode to get the airplane to get closer to wlace but was still off course while trying to return on to the arrival. We had a ground speed of 436 knots so I didn't think there was an issue with the turn until the controller questioned me. The first officer was on the radio with the FBO while all this was happening. I would estimate that we were at least 2 miles off course before returning on to the arrival. To my knowledge no other aircraft were required to move because of my error.what I have since found out is; the smart turn setting in the FMS was set to a 15 mile smart turn and has since been reduced to a 4 mile smart turn which should end any issues with an early smart turn on a STAR or SID.
