Narrative:

While in LNAV/VNAV on descent pilot monitoring reentered ILS approaching zzzzz in order to extend the ILS to ZZZZZ1. Got message unable due to altitude constraint. He deleted a couple points and executed as we passed zzzzz. I announced cws (control wheel steering) in both lateral and vertical and realized we needed to descend to 6000 ft at ZZZZZ2. I began the descent thinking I had disconnected the autopilot but was still in cws. As we approached 6000 ft; I realized I had not disconnected the autopilot and the stick forces were substantial as I missed the level off altitude. I clicked off the autopilot and corrected back to 6000 ft from what I thought was 5800 ft. I reengaged the autopilot and we continued with the approach.
