Narrative:

On short flight from vny to oxr commenced descent to land, but mistook open field for airport. When about 600' above terrain had difficulty locating airport. Told tower who gave vectors to runway. Setting sun and haze contributed to error. Relied on LORAN. Should have used localizer for straight in approach which was approved by tower. Pilot fatigued at time--should have used all available navigation aids.
