Narrative:
Mlt X was posted with strips showing 375 KT speed but actual speed was 450 KTS. No updated speed was entered into the computer to update strip times. When new controller on sector started to update times and information in computer the picture on the strips and on odaps screen changed to show the situation in real time figures. Supplemental information from acn 152494: based on strip times, bmb Y would enter hnl airspace 30 mins prior to mlt X entering at angle. Based on abeam times, the aircraft would have longitudinal sep. As the 2 sectors were being split, the speed of mlt X was updated which was passed on in the briefing. When updated, there was no longer longitudinal sep and the deal occurred. Corrective action was immediately taken to climb mlt X to FL340 to provide vertical sep. Supplemental information from acn 152746: problem arose because true airspeed was not updated thus odaps generated inaccurate times. Contributing factor was that the sector was shifted from several controllers in short amount of time. Was discovered assuming controller was making thorough update on strips and in odaps.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 MIL ACFT ON CONVERGING COURSES OVER THE OCEAN LOSE SEPARATION DUE TO INCORRECT AIRSPEED ON FLT STRIP.
Narrative: MLT X WAS POSTED WITH STRIPS SHOWING 375 KT SPD BUT ACTUAL SPD WAS 450 KTS. NO UPDATED SPD WAS ENTERED INTO THE COMPUTER TO UPDATE STRIP TIMES. WHEN NEW CTLR ON SECTOR STARTED TO UPDATE TIMES AND INFO IN COMPUTER THE PICTURE ON THE STRIPS AND ON ODAPS SCREEN CHANGED TO SHOW THE SITUATION IN REAL TIME FIGURES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 152494: BASED ON STRIP TIMES, BMB Y WOULD ENTER HNL AIRSPACE 30 MINS PRIOR TO MLT X ENTERING AT ANGLE. BASED ON ABEAM TIMES, THE ACFT WOULD HAVE LONGITUDINAL SEP. AS THE 2 SECTORS WERE BEING SPLIT, THE SPD OF MLT X WAS UPDATED WHICH WAS PASSED ON IN THE BRIEFING. WHEN UPDATED, THERE WAS NO LONGER LONGITUDINAL SEP AND THE DEAL OCCURRED. CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN TO CLB MLT X TO FL340 TO PROVIDE VERT SEP. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 152746: PROB AROSE BECAUSE TRUE AIRSPD WAS NOT UPDATED THUS ODAPS GENERATED INACCURATE TIMES. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THAT THE SECTOR WAS SHIFTED FROM SEVERAL CTLRS IN SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. WAS DISCOVERED ASSUMING CTLR WAS MAKING THOROUGH UPDATE ON STRIPS AND IN ODAPS.
