Narrative:
Taxiing slowly on the j-line into [the] gate; we both noted safety zone clear at that time. As I approached the gate area near the service road; I was given a crossed wands signal. I began to comfortably apply the brakes to stop the aircraft. As soon I began to brake; we noticed a fuel truck coming from the right side of aircraft at a good rate of speed encroaching on our safety zone. At that instant; we both realized the fuel truck was not stopping! I immediately stomped down on the brakes; and turned on all landing lights; and came to an abrupt stop! The fuel truck continued on his way. I would estimate we were approximately ten feet from the service road and fuel truck when the incident occurred. Upon arriving at the gate; after shutdown and parking checklist ran; I made a PA to passengers explaining the sudden stop. I was glad to have had a great partner that evening; as our sa (situational awareness) avoided a very hazardous situation.the driver was very remorseful to the situation. I would like very much for the gentleman to receive more training; as I feel this would never happen again to him. I believe the ramp video that we saw would be a great training aid for others. It was very eye opening to me; to see how quickly things unfolded!
