Narrative:
Due to a misunderstanding about fueling the aircraft (which has 1 fuel gauge inoperative), we pushed back from the gate about 1 hour late. When we tried to start #1 engine on left ignition got no ignition. Followed no start procedure, then started #2 engine on right ignition. Went back and started #1 on right ignition--all ok. Since we had 1 good ignition system which is legitimate. For the other jets I've flown we were both satisfied. Didn't bother to call maintenance on the radio. Just flew to destination and radioed in the problem en route. Maintenance supervisor met us at the gate and politely advised that on this aircraft, both ignition systems are required to be working!!! Moral: take the time to do things by the book, no matter how late you are.
