Narrative:
Eil tower does not have an ATIS. The lack of an ATIS creates a burden to the users of eil and increases the workload for ATC at fai TRACON as well as eil tower. Call me and I can give background information. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter has only been at facility a few months, but has observed that workload increases when military aircraft return to airport and WX and airport information must be issued to each aircraft. Many aircraft go out as flts and return single aircraft, thereby adding to the controllers workload. Reporter states that in some cases stage 2 service has been denied because of the extra workload caused by relaying ATIS information. Reporter gave ATC experience. Fai airspace goes up to FL200 and 40 mi out. Facility manager knows about problem. No incidents to his knowledge have occurred because of this problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CTLR REPORTER COMPLAINS LCL MIL ARPT DOES NOT HAVE AN ATIS CAUSING INCREASED WORKLOAD AT TIMES.
Narrative: EIL TWR DOES NOT HAVE AN ATIS. THE LACK OF AN ATIS CREATES A BURDEN TO THE USERS OF EIL AND INCREASES THE WORKLOAD FOR ATC AT FAI TRACON AS WELL AS EIL TWR. CALL ME AND I CAN GIVE BACKGROUND INFO. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR HAS ONLY BEEN AT FAC A FEW MONTHS, BUT HAS OBSERVED THAT WORKLOAD INCREASES WHEN MIL ACFT RETURN TO ARPT AND WX AND ARPT INFO MUST BE ISSUED TO EACH ACFT. MANY ACFT GO OUT AS FLTS AND RETURN SINGLE ACFT, THEREBY ADDING TO THE CTLRS WORKLOAD. RPTR STATES THAT IN SOME CASES STAGE 2 SVC HAS BEEN DENIED BECAUSE OF THE EXTRA WORKLOAD CAUSED BY RELAYING ATIS INFO. RPTR GAVE ATC EXPERIENCE. FAI AIRSPACE GOES UP TO FL200 AND 40 MI OUT. FAC MGR KNOWS ABOUT PROB. NO INCIDENTS TO HIS KNOWLEDGE HAVE OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THIS PROB.
