Narrative:
During the arrival into clt; an advisory message stating FMS1; and FMS2 fail appeared on EICAS. All vertical and lateral guidance was lost. Prior to this issue; ATC had issued a heading; due to severe weather in the area. FMA (flight mode annunciator) was in heading mode. Pm (pilot monitoring) attempted to reprogram the expected ILS (as visual backup) approach into the FMS which never latched on to full FMS integration. Multiple attempts were made to attempt to 'trick' the FMS into re-sequencing.the event occurred prior to entering expected moderate turbulence enroute to the clt area at the time. At this time I have no recommendation to prevent this event as this is the second time I have had the FMS 'dump' all information without explanation with the inability to reprogram. Always be prepared to revert to green needles.
