Narrative:
En route to E02, an uncontrolled airport in odessa, tx from snk, I mistakenly landed at maf west/O contacting the tower until after landing. Unfamiliar with this area, I thought I had flown by maf, which in retrospect was mdd. The afternoon sun was causing a large amount of glare, and I became distracted from navigation duties while watching for traffic. I had been in contact with mdd approach, and when I thought E02 was in sight, I requested a frequency change to their advisory frequency. My mistaken position resulted from not using my navigation radios to verify my position, something I shall always do in the future. To the best of my knowledge, there was no other traffic which was significantly affected by my action, but I am fully aware of how dangerous this could be.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA INTENDING TO LAND AT AN UNCONTROLLED ARPT LANDED AT A CONTROLLED ARPT WITHOUT CALLING THE TWR UNTIL AFTER LNDG.
Narrative: ENRTE TO E02, AN UNCONTROLLED ARPT IN ODESSA, TX FROM SNK, I MISTAKENLY LANDED AT MAF W/O CONTACTING THE TWR UNTIL AFTER LNDG. UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS AREA, I THOUGHT I HAD FLOWN BY MAF, WHICH IN RETROSPECT WAS MDD. THE AFTERNOON SUN WAS CAUSING A LARGE AMOUNT OF GLARE, AND I BECAME DISTRACTED FROM NAV DUTIES WHILE WATCHING FOR TFC. I HAD BEEN IN CONTACT WITH MDD APCH, AND WHEN I THOUGHT E02 WAS IN SIGHT, I REQUESTED A FREQ CHANGE TO THEIR ADVISORY FREQ. MY MISTAKEN POS RESULTED FROM NOT USING MY NAV RADIOS TO VERIFY MY POS, SOMETHING I SHALL ALWAYS DO IN THE FUTURE. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC WHICH WAS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY MY ACTION, BUT I AM FULLY AWARE OF HOW DANGEROUS THIS COULD BE.
