Narrative:

ATC turned us off of the arrival and told us to expect a hold. After a period of time we were given the hold and an expect further clearance time. We complied and started to run the fuel numbers. We knew we didn't have enough fuel to continue holding until the end of the efc time. We sent an ACARS message advising of the situation. ATC assigned another heading. We advised ATC that with any further delays we would declare minimum fuel. ATC re-cleared us to join the arrival. At that time we were at minimum fuel; we advised ATC that we were now minimum fuel and they acknowledged.we were assigned slower airspeeds and given higher altitudes than published on the arrival. We asked how far away from the airport we would have to fly before turning back to the airport. ATC advised us 15 miles; we told them we needed shorter. ATC said they couldn't get us in any shorter. The captain told me to advise ATC [and] that we were diverting [to an alternate]. I complied. ATC assigned a heading to fly for our base turn into [our filed destination]. ATC cleared us for the visual. We landed without further incident. Our fuel upon landing was 1;500 pounds. Our minimum reserve fuel was 1;500 pounds. We did not advise the flight attendant due to time restraints and no action needed by the flight attendant.
