Narrative:
Navigating via eyw VOR, inbound and approximately 200 degree right at approximately 18 mi, contacted eyw approach from flight following with ZMA. Received radar contact and was proceeding via radar vectors from approach when I was asked if familiar with eyw replied negative, first time in area. Approach vectored me to the airport area, asked if I had airport in sight and gave me tower frequency. The airport with visibility contact was NAS eyw and not advised by approach of a second airport in the direction in which he was vectoring me. Upon contacting tower I was cleared to land. Upon touching down I was concerned something wasn't right, at which time I contacted tower requested and was given ground frequency. Taxied and cleared active runways. Received light signals from tower to stop. I then received the proper frequency and received clearance and departed, and landed eyw. As PIC I realize I'm responsible for the navigation and safety of the aircraft; however, the decisions I made were based upon the guidance I received from ATC. I find it most unusual that the tower would give clearance to land and turned over to ground control, before they even had visibility contact.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA PLT ADVISES ARPT IN SIGHT, BUT WRONG ONE. LNDG MIL ARPT.
Narrative: NAVIGATING VIA EYW VOR, INBOUND AND APPROX 200 DEG R AT APPROX 18 MI, CONTACTED EYW APCH FROM FLT FOLLOWING WITH ZMA. RECEIVED RADAR CONTACT AND WAS PROCEEDING VIA RADAR VECTORS FROM APCH WHEN I WAS ASKED IF FAMILIAR WITH EYW REPLIED NEGATIVE, FIRST TIME IN AREA. APCH VECTORED ME TO THE ARPT AREA, ASKED IF I HAD ARPT IN SIGHT AND GAVE ME TWR FREQ. THE ARPT WITH VIS CONTACT WAS NAS EYW AND NOT ADVISED BY APCH OF A SECOND ARPT IN THE DIRECTION IN WHICH HE WAS VECTORING ME. UPON CONTACTING TWR I WAS CLRED TO LAND. UPON TOUCHING DOWN I WAS CONCERNED SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT, AT WHICH TIME I CONTACTED TWR REQUESTED AND WAS GIVEN GND FREQ. TAXIED AND CLRED ACTIVE RWYS. RECEIVED LIGHT SIGNALS FROM TWR TO STOP. I THEN RECEIVED THE PROPER FREQ AND RECEIVED CLRNC AND DEPARTED, AND LANDED EYW. AS PIC I REALIZE I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR THE NAV AND SAFETY OF THE ACFT; HOWEVER, THE DECISIONS I MADE WERE BASED UPON THE GUIDANCE I RECEIVED FROM ATC. I FIND IT MOST UNUSUAL THAT THE TWR WOULD GIVE CLRNC TO LAND AND TURNED OVER TO GND CTL, BEFORE THEY EVEN HAD VIS CONTACT.
