Narrative:
Climbing to assigned FL200, I entered clouds and almost immediately begin picking up moderate mixed icing. I was on vectors (heading 200) to intercept the SID. Upon ice penetration, I informed controller and advised I was turning to heading 090 degrees to descend to VFR. Breaking out at about 15500 ft, I canceled IFR and proceeded to destination VFR. ATC did not advise of any conflicts, and was extremely helpful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA PLT RUNS INTO ICING ON CLBOUT. TURNS ACFT AS HE ADVISES ARTCC RADAR CTLR OF HIS INTENT TO DSND OUT OF THE ICING.
Narrative: CLBING TO ASSIGNED FL200, I ENTERED CLOUDS AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY BEGIN PICKING UP MODERATE MIXED ICING. I WAS ON VECTORS (HDG 200) TO INTERCEPT THE SID. UPON ICE PENETRATION, I INFORMED CTLR AND ADVISED I WAS TURNING TO HDG 090 DEGS TO DSND TO VFR. BREAKING OUT AT ABOUT 15500 FT, I CANCELED IFR AND PROCEEDED TO DEST VFR. ATC DID NOT ADVISE OF ANY CONFLICTS, AND WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL.
