Narrative:
While setting up cockpit for our next leg of flight; we overheard xmissions through ground personnel's radio that our aircraft had mechanical problems. Sent first officer out to investigate. He reported back that our horizontal stabilizer had significant damage. Sometime during the previous leg, the articulating gear door on the right main gear had left the aircraft, resulting in damage to the wing flap hinge fairing and horizontal stabilizer. We think the door broke when the gear was extended, but we were unaware of anything being wrong with the aircraft. When I left the cockpit to inspect the damage, maintenance personnel were already making plans to tow the aircraft to the hangar. No one called us about the damage or to inspect our aircraft. Had it not been for the cleaners on board the aircraft, we would have been the last people to find out about the damage.
