Narrative:
At atl, fueled aircraft to 2800 pounds, after captain looked at WX. Fay approach gave us extensive vectoring for both WX and restr area upon our arrival in fay. Onboard WX radar showed little directly at the airport, but another aircraft took a missed approach. As we were vectored to the airport, controllers made mention of 'multiple lightning strikes on the airport'. As we got in close, captain elected to proceed to our altitude (myr). The line of thunderstorms between our position and myr airport and the controller's mention of more extensive vectoring caused captain to consider rdu as another alternate. Fay approach controller mentioned that rdu WX was 'ok'. As we proceeded to rdu, we were told that rdu was no longer accepting incoming traffic due to thunderstorms at field. We turned back toward fay and were advised that WX there 'was getting worse.' considering fuel, shaw and pope AFB were considered as remaining alternates. We were vectored to pope for an ILS to runway 23 and a safe landing. Supplemental information from acn 154166. We declared 'minimum fuel' and diverted to pope. We landed at pope AFB with approximately 800 pounds fuel. Fay approach not cooperative, any request for deviation to first or second alternate met with extensive vectors and/or holding clrncs. Only after declaring 'minimum fuel' did we get his attention. Question of reliability of fay approach WX reports. Our radar showed only rain over fay with tower to east and northeast. Our decision to divert based on WX reports even though not corroborated by our radar.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: COMMUTER FLT CREW RUNS INTO WX PROBLEMS CLOSE TO DESTINATION, GET WEATHERED OUT OF ALTERNATE AS WELL, DECLARE 'MINIMUM' FUEL STATUS AND LAND WELL INTO THEIR FUEL RESERVES.
Narrative: AT ATL, FUELED ACFT TO 2800 LBS, AFTER CAPT LOOKED AT WX. FAY APCH GAVE US EXTENSIVE VECTORING FOR BOTH WX AND RESTR AREA UPON OUR ARR IN FAY. ONBOARD WX RADAR SHOWED LITTLE DIRECTLY AT THE ARPT, BUT ANOTHER ACFT TOOK A MISSED APCH. AS WE WERE VECTORED TO THE ARPT, CTLRS MADE MENTION OF 'MULTIPLE LIGHTNING STRIKES ON THE ARPT'. AS WE GOT IN CLOSE, CAPT ELECTED TO PROCEED TO OUR ALT (MYR). THE LINE OF TSTMS BTWN OUR POS AND MYR ARPT AND THE CTLR'S MENTION OF MORE EXTENSIVE VECTORING CAUSED CAPT TO CONSIDER RDU AS ANOTHER ALTERNATE. FAY APCH CTLR MENTIONED THAT RDU WX WAS 'OK'. AS WE PROCEEDED TO RDU, WE WERE TOLD THAT RDU WAS NO LONGER ACCEPTING INCOMING TFC DUE TO TSTMS AT FIELD. WE TURNED BACK TOWARD FAY AND WERE ADVISED THAT WX THERE 'WAS GETTING WORSE.' CONSIDERING FUEL, SHAW AND POPE AFB WERE CONSIDERED AS REMAINING ALTERNATES. WE WERE VECTORED TO POPE FOR AN ILS TO RWY 23 AND A SAFE LNDG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 154166. WE DECLARED 'MINIMUM FUEL' AND DIVERTED TO POPE. WE LANDED AT POPE AFB WITH APPROX 800 LBS FUEL. FAY APCH NOT COOPERATIVE, ANY REQUEST FOR DEVIATION TO FIRST OR SEC ALTERNATE MET WITH EXTENSIVE VECTORS AND/OR HOLDING CLRNCS. ONLY AFTER DECLARING 'MINIMUM FUEL' DID WE GET HIS ATTN. QUESTION OF RELIABILITY OF FAY APCH WX RPTS. OUR RADAR SHOWED ONLY RAIN OVER FAY WITH TWR TO E AND NE. OUR DECISION TO DIVERT BASED ON WX RPTS EVEN THOUGH NOT CORROBORATED BY OUR RADAR.
