Narrative:
On taxi out; ground control told us the aircraft behind us said our left engine was on fire. At [the] same time flight attendants called to say passengers reported left engine was on fire. We had no unusual indications in the cockpit. We shut the engine down and ran the QRH engine tailpipe fire procedure. We requested arff (airport rescue and fire fighting) to check us over and follow us to the gate. I entered the malfunction in the log and the aircraft was taken out of service.I am not sure of why we had the fire or torching; our maintenance department will check the engine over for any leaks or seal issues.
