Narrative:
During pushback; courier compartment smoke detector began to alarm. Pushback terminated; no smoke or odor detectable in any part of aircraft. Maintenance came on board and declared the fix was to replace smoke detector battery. I informed them that it was not a battery alarm (1 short ring) but a full on smoke alarm. 10 minutes later; they told me they were 'drying' the smoke detector because the problem was 'humidity'. I asked if drying the smoke detector was an approved maintenance procedure. They refused to answer. I then demanded they return the logbook; which they had removed from the flight deck. I wrote up the smoke detector. They had no spares; and robbed one from another parked aircraft. I am very disturbed that maintenance tried twice to lie to me and cause me to fly an aircraft with a compromised smoke/fire protection system.
