Narrative:
On descent into hkg the second officer handed up the ATIS information, 'runway 31 ILS, visibility 10 KM, 4/8 cloud at 4000', altimeter 29.92 inches (the cloud cover is approximately, we were mostly VFR at 3500). In truth, the altimeter setting was 992 hp. We flew the final (long straight in) approximately 600' low until G/south intercept at approximately 9 mi from T/D, then flew on G/south to T/D. I feel we were very lucky to have flown this particular approach over water. In the future, all our ATIS altimeter information will be labeled MB, hp, or in.

Title: ACR WDB FLT CREW MISTAKES ALTIMETER SETTING EXPRESSED IN HECTOPASCALS FOR ALTIMETER IN INCHES RESULTING IN INITIALLY BEING 600' LOW ON APCH TO HKG.
Narrative: ON DSNT INTO HKG THE S/O HANDED UP THE ATIS INFO, 'RWY 31 ILS, VIS 10 KM, 4/8 CLOUD AT 4000', ALTIMETER 29.92 INCHES (THE CLOUD COVER IS APPROX, WE WERE MOSTLY VFR AT 3500). IN TRUTH, THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS 992 HP. WE FLEW THE FINAL (LONG STRAIGHT IN) APPROX 600' LOW UNTIL G/S INTERCEPT AT APPROX 9 MI FROM T/D, THEN FLEW ON G/S TO T/D. I FEEL WE WERE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE FLOWN THIS PARTICULAR APCH OVER WATER. IN THE FUTURE, ALL OUR ATIS ALTIMETER INFO WILL BE LABELED MB, HP, OR IN.
