Narrative:

I fly a helicopter for radio station traffic reports. While flying over spirity of st louis airport, an aircraft in the pattern declared an near miss to the tower. I had the aircraft in sight on the downwind leg of the traffic pattern and told the tower he was in sight. The other aircraft passed behind my helicopter and in my opinion was never close enough to us to be a hazard. After the incident I called the tower at their request and was told they had us both in sight but couldn't tell how close we were. In the future, when flying over this airport, I'll request a higher altitude to be well above the pattern. Also the training in the area is so congested it's hard to get clearance from the tower at the 5 mi mark when just flying through.
