Narrative:

My presolo student and I took off from manchester airport for landing practice. During the course of the 50 mins we were in the pattern, the traffic level had risen from minimal to near saturation complete with frequency congestion. The primary runway in use at this time was 35, winds were calm. During my training flight, I had witnessed 2 arrs on runway 6, a near perpendicular runway. After the sixth touch and go on runway 35, while my student was turning the crosswind leg, I had requested a full stop landing on runway 6. The tower asked if we could hold short of the runway intersection for departing traffic. Total length of 6/24 is 5847', leaving about 5000' available before the intersection. I replied that I could comply. Tower then advised us of an small aircraft entering the 45 degree for the left downwind leg of runway 35 and for us to report him in sight and to report on a left base for runway 6. I reported the traffic in sight and would call on left base. I tried my best to keep communications with the tower short and concise due to the mounting congestion. While turning through the base leg of runway 6 on an arc, I tried to get through to the tower to report my position and was on short final not long after that. By this time my student was getting behind in his flying technique and procedures and had required my help. Just prior to the main wheels touching down, I began to wonder if I had missed the towers clearance for us to land. Before I had a chance to come to a conclusion, the main wheels touched down, and before the nose wheel touched, the tower had called and asked if we were still on the left base. I replied that we were on the ground. He replied 'roger, right turn at alpha, ground 9'. After contacting ground and receiving clearance to taxi, ground asked if the tower had given us clearance to land. While I was still pondering his question, my student radioed that we did. Ground acknowledged us and never made any mention of further discussion about it. My student had perceived that our hold short clearance meant that we were also cleared to land, hence his quick reply to ground. His misinterp of our clearance was rectified later and now understands the situation. I did visit the tower afterwards to explain what happened and to assess the situation.

Title: INSTRUCTOR PLT LANDS WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: MY PRESOLO STUDENT AND I TOOK OFF FROM MANCHESTER ARPT FOR LNDG PRACTICE. DURING THE COURSE OF THE 50 MINS WE WERE IN THE PATTERN, THE TFC LEVEL HAD RISEN FROM MINIMAL TO NEAR SATURATION COMPLETE WITH FREQ CONGESTION. THE PRIMARY RWY IN USE AT THIS TIME WAS 35, WINDS WERE CALM. DURING MY TRNING FLT, I HAD WITNESSED 2 ARRS ON RWY 6, A NEAR PERPENDICULAR RWY. AFTER THE SIXTH TOUCH AND GO ON RWY 35, WHILE MY STUDENT WAS TURNING THE XWIND LEG, I HAD REQUESTED A FULL STOP LNDG ON RWY 6. THE TWR ASKED IF WE COULD HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY INTXN FOR DEPARTING TFC. TOTAL LENGTH OF 6/24 IS 5847', LEAVING ABOUT 5000' AVAILABLE BEFORE THE INTXN. I REPLIED THAT I COULD COMPLY. TWR THEN ADVISED US OF AN SMA ENTERING THE 45 DEG FOR THE L DOWNWIND LEG OF RWY 35 AND FOR US TO RPT HIM IN SIGHT AND TO RPT ON A L BASE FOR RWY 6. I RPTED THE TFC IN SIGHT AND WOULD CALL ON L BASE. I TRIED MY BEST TO KEEP COMS WITH THE TWR SHORT AND CONCISE DUE TO THE MOUNTING CONGESTION. WHILE TURNING THROUGH THE BASE LEG OF RWY 6 ON AN ARC, I TRIED TO GET THROUGH TO THE TWR TO RPT MY POS AND WAS ON SHORT FINAL NOT LONG AFTER THAT. BY THIS TIME MY STUDENT WAS GETTING BEHIND IN HIS FLYING TECHNIQUE AND PROCS AND HAD REQUIRED MY HELP. JUST PRIOR TO THE MAIN WHEELS TOUCHING DOWN, I BEGAN TO WONDER IF I HAD MISSED THE TWRS CLRNC FOR US TO LAND. BEFORE I HAD A CHANCE TO COME TO A CONCLUSION, THE MAIN WHEELS TOUCHED DOWN, AND BEFORE THE NOSE WHEEL TOUCHED, THE TWR HAD CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE STILL ON THE L BASE. I REPLIED THAT WE WERE ON THE GND. HE REPLIED 'ROGER, R TURN AT ALPHA, GND 9'. AFTER CONTACTING GND AND RECEIVING CLRNC TO TAXI, GND ASKED IF THE TWR HAD GIVEN US CLRNC TO LAND. WHILE I WAS STILL PONDERING HIS QUESTION, MY STUDENT RADIOED THAT WE DID. GND ACKNOWLEDGED US AND NEVER MADE ANY MENTION OF FURTHER DISCUSSION ABOUT IT. MY STUDENT HAD PERCEIVED THAT OUR HOLD SHORT CLRNC MEANT THAT WE WERE ALSO CLRED TO LAND, HENCE HIS QUICK REPLY TO GND. HIS MISINTERP OF OUR CLRNC WAS RECTIFIED LATER AND NOW UNDERSTANDS THE SITUATION. I DID VISIT THE TWR AFTERWARDS TO EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED AND TO ASSESS THE SITUATION.
