Narrative:
While on the localizer xxr approach; [the] instructor pilot (ip) noted the engine making an odd noise and asked [the] pilot under instruction (pui) if he noticed the noise as well. Pui said it sounded fine to him. Initially; ip thought it may have just been the engine changing rpms because of the light chop while on the approach inbound. After completion of the approach; the pui executed the missed approach go-around and both ip and pui noticed a very loud knocking noise coming from the engine followed by severe vibration. Ip notified tower of our intentions and tower gave us a landing clearance on xxr. No emergency was declared and no assistance was requested. While on taxi back to the ramp; ip noticed that cylinder heat temperature (cht) 4 was excessively higher than all of the others. The knocking also continued while taxiing in; this time accompanied with the smell of exhaust fumes.
