Narrative:
On a climbout; there was an unusual level of noise in the aircraft. After checking hatches etc; the aircraft turned back and made a precautionary landing at ZZZZ.on landing; it was found that an exhaust manifold pipe had dropped off and the resulting hot gases had burnt part of the engine cowling. The missing pipe was recovered intact from the local golf course.apparently this was a known problem with this exhaust configuration. An investigation is in progress.
