Narrative:
Climbing in IMC, heavy precipitation/rain, light turbulence out of 2600' for 3400'. Impact rain in static port causing erratic jumps on altimeter and vsi. Selected alternate static source during climb and leveled at 3400' assigned. When later asked to confirm level at 3400', selected normal static source and observed indicated altitude of 3150'. Reported to ATC and corrected to 3400'. Rest of approach uneventful with occasional 100-200' jumps of altimeter along with vsi excursions.

Title: SMA PLT ON INS APCH HAS ERRATIC INDICATIONS ON ALTIMETER AND VSI. SWITCHES TO ALTERNATE STATIC SOURCE.
Narrative: CLBING IN IMC, HEAVY PRECIPITATION/RAIN, LIGHT TURB OUT OF 2600' FOR 3400'. IMPACT RAIN IN STATIC PORT CAUSING ERRATIC JUMPS ON ALTIMETER AND VSI. SELECTED ALTERNATE STATIC SOURCE DURING CLB AND LEVELED AT 3400' ASSIGNED. WHEN LATER ASKED TO CONFIRM LEVEL AT 3400', SELECTED NORMAL STATIC SOURCE AND OBSERVED INDICATED ALT OF 3150'. RPTED TO ATC AND CORRECTED TO 3400'. REST OF APCH UNEVENTFUL WITH OCCASIONAL 100-200' JUMPS OF ALTIMETER ALONG WITH VSI EXCURSIONS.
