Narrative:

Departing from dallas love field after clearance from clearance delivery, ground and tower, I departed from runway 13L, for possum kingdom lake. Cleared across NAS dallas VFR for 2500' AGL below. After takeoff, about 300' AGL, tower instructed turn right to 190 degree when speed and altitude permit. I made my right turn increasing altitude and in my scan noted my left egt was almost pegged out while the right egt was reading as it normally does on takeoff (low). I had full mixture, full propellers, and full throttle with smooth engines, temperatures normal, normal rpms and 28 plus mp. I had always heard engine failure will show first with the egt and since this was the first time I had ever seen the left engine read like this decided for a precautionary landing since the field and mechanics were almost directly below and the whole TCA was ahead. I was still on tower as they had not switched me yet and called tower requesting a return to the field. They asked why and I told them my left egt was almost maxed and that was unusual for my plane. They asked again the problem, I gave them the same answer. Tower asked if I wished to declare an emergency and told them no. I believe they again asked if my readings had changed and I told them my egt was still high. They gave me clearance to return to field and I made a right turn which now put me right downwind. During my return to field I heard no vectors for heading or altitude. As I approached base for runway 13L I was cleared to land #1. The field emergency equipment had scrambled and after landing and taxiing when I cleared the active I indicated to the crash crew all was well with a 'thumbs up' and waited for ground to direct me where I park. I called my mechanic to tell him what had gone on and he suggested I have facility do an engine run up and check my egt probe. I had it done the next morning and they said it was 'okay'. Upon departing friday, I was informed the FAA wanted me to call. I did, they want me to fill out an incident report monday afternoon.

Title: PLT OF TWIN ON DEP EXPERIENCES EXTREMELY HIGH EGT READINGS ON RIGHT ENGINE. MADE PRECAUTIONARY LNDG.

Narrative: DEPARTING FROM DALLAS LOVE FIELD AFTER CLRNC FROM CLRNC DELIVERY, GND AND TWR, I DEPARTED FROM RWY 13L, FOR POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE. CLRED ACROSS NAS DALLAS VFR FOR 2500' AGL BELOW. AFTER TKOF, ABOUT 300' AGL, TWR INSTRUCTED TURN R TO 190 DEG WHEN SPD AND ALT PERMIT. I MADE MY R TURN INCREASING ALT AND IN MY SCAN NOTED MY L EGT WAS ALMOST PEGGED OUT WHILE THE R EGT WAS READING AS IT NORMALLY DOES ON TKOF (LOW). I HAD FULL MIXTURE, FULL PROPS, AND FULL THROTTLE WITH SMOOTH ENGINES, TEMPS NORMAL, NORMAL RPMS AND 28 PLUS MP. I HAD ALWAYS HEARD ENGINE FAILURE WILL SHOW FIRST WITH THE EGT AND SINCE THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD EVER SEEN THE L ENG READ LIKE THIS DECIDED FOR A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG SINCE THE FIELD AND MECHS WERE ALMOST DIRECTLY BELOW AND THE WHOLE TCA WAS AHEAD. I WAS STILL ON TWR AS THEY HAD NOT SWITCHED ME YET AND CALLED TWR REQUESTING A RETURN TO THE FIELD. THEY ASKED WHY AND I TOLD THEM MY L EGT WAS ALMOST MAXED AND THAT WAS UNUSUAL FOR MY PLANE. THEY ASKED AGAIN THE PROB, I GAVE THEM THE SAME ANSWER. TWR ASKED IF I WISHED TO DECLARE AN EMER AND TOLD THEM NO. I BELIEVE THEY AGAIN ASKED IF MY READINGS HAD CHANGED AND I TOLD THEM MY EGT WAS STILL HIGH. THEY GAVE ME CLRNC TO RETURN TO FIELD AND I MADE A R TURN WHICH NOW PUT ME R DOWNWIND. DURING MY RETURN TO FIELD I HEARD NO VECTORS FOR HDG OR ALT. AS I APCHED BASE FOR RWY 13L I WAS CLRED TO LAND #1. THE FIELD EMER EQUIP HAD SCRAMBLED AND AFTER LNDG AND TAXIING WHEN I CLRED THE ACTIVE I INDICATED TO THE CRASH CREW ALL WAS WELL WITH A 'THUMBS UP' AND WAITED FOR GND TO DIRECT ME WHERE I PARK. I CALLED MY MECH TO TELL HIM WHAT HAD GONE ON AND HE SUGGESTED I HAVE FAC DO AN ENG RUN UP AND CHK MY EGT PROBE. I HAD IT DONE THE NEXT MORNING AND THEY SAID IT WAS 'OKAY'. UPON DEPARTING FRIDAY, I WAS INFORMED THE FAA WANTED ME TO CALL. I DID, THEY WANT ME TO FILL OUT AN INCIDENT RPT MONDAY AFTERNOON.
