Narrative:
Ground control used spot numbers in lieu of call signs to issue initial taxi instructions. We were monitoring ground as we approached spot xx. Ground transmitted; 'spot xx turn left now!' I looked to my right and saw a large widebody aircraft approaching. We had enough room to pull out in front of it; but we did not have a proper taxi clearance to do so. I quickly replied; 'aircraft X at spot 31.' proper taxi instructions were issued at that point; and we were able to taxi out ahead of the large aircraft.'spot xx turn left now!' is not a taxi instruction! It is meaningless without a call sign. Imagine you have a plane in position for takeoff and you say to it; 'runway 17R takeoff now!' it is absurd; isn't it? So is; 'spot xx turn left now!' please inform ground controllers that pilots must hear their call sign and read back the instructions before we can taxi. This is my third report about this problem. On the last one the controller said; 'spot xx turn left now! No need to acknowledge.' he skipped the call sign and read back! What more can I do to help end this safety threat at dfw?
