Narrative:
Cleared from terminal area to taxi to runway 21R via 'a' and taxi across runway 21L. Captain stopped short of runway 21L and asked me to call tower for takeoff clearance. It should have occurred to me the captain stopped short of the general aviation runway but it didn't. I called for takeoff and we were cleared for takeoff on runway 21R. We taxied onto runway 21L and began takeoff roll. I added power and commented to the captain that this runway seemed very narrow (it is 150' wide but striped to 75' wide). At about 70 KTS the captain realized we were on the short runway and aborted the takeoff. We turned around on that runway with tower's permission and taxied to runway 21R and proceeded with an uneventful takeoff after studying brake energy charts. The first officer was remiss in not paying attention to the captain's taxiing. As we turned prematurely onto runway 21L I was double checking the altitude restriction for turning from runway heading on the SID instead of watching the captain and the airport. I guess you could call it complacency. Small airport, no traffic, etc. The tower never intervened throughout the whole evolution. Also the left runway is marked 3-21 vice 3R-21L. It needs better signs. Needless to say I feel awful. Extreme vigilance and the 'how goes it?' question will be added to when operating at unfamiliar airports and each time I enter a runway even at familiar airports.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF LGT CLEARED TO CROSS RY 21L TKOF RWY 21R AT PSC. HELD SHORT OF RWY 21L. CLEARED FOR TKOF BY TWR CAPT TURNED ONTO RWY 21L BUT ABORTED TKOF AT 70 KTS WHEN HE REALIZED THEY WERE TAKING OFF ON WRONG RWY.
Narrative: CLRED FROM TERMINAL AREA TO TAXI TO RWY 21R VIA 'A' AND TAXI ACROSS RWY 21L. CAPT STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 21L AND ASKED ME TO CALL TWR FOR TKOF CLRNC. IT SHOULD HAVE OCCURRED TO ME THE CAPT STOPPED SHORT OF THE GENERAL AVIATION RWY BUT IT DIDN'T. I CALLED FOR TKOF AND WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 21R. WE TAXIED ONTO RWY 21L AND BEGAN TKOF ROLL. I ADDED PWR AND COMMENTED TO THE CAPT THAT THIS RWY SEEMED VERY NARROW (IT IS 150' WIDE BUT STRIPED TO 75' WIDE). AT ABOUT 70 KTS THE CAPT REALIZED WE WERE ON THE SHORT RWY AND ABORTED THE TKOF. WE TURNED AROUND ON THAT RWY WITH TWR'S PERMISSION AND TAXIED TO RWY 21R AND PROCEEDED WITH AN UNEVENTFUL TKOF AFTER STUDYING BRAKE ENERGY CHARTS. THE F/O WAS REMISS IN NOT PAYING ATTN TO THE CAPT'S TAXIING. AS WE TURNED PREMATURELY ONTO RWY 21L I WAS DOUBLE CHKING THE ALT RESTRICTION FOR TURNING FROM RWY HDG ON THE SID INSTEAD OF WATCHING THE CAPT AND THE ARPT. I GUESS YOU COULD CALL IT COMPLACENCY. SMALL ARPT, NO TFC, ETC. THE TWR NEVER INTERVENED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EVOLUTION. ALSO THE L RWY IS MARKED 3-21 VICE 3R-21L. IT NEEDS BETTER SIGNS. NEEDLESS TO SAY I FEEL AWFUL. EXTREME VIGILANCE AND THE 'HOW GOES IT?' QUESTION WILL BE ADDED TO WHEN OPERATING AT UNFAMILIAR ARPTS AND EACH TIME I ENTER A RWY EVEN AT FAMILIAR ARPTS.
