Narrative:
[We were] flying to enter the left downwind for runway xx (winds favorable 180-200 18 knots or so). [We] made position calls at 10 and 5 nautical miles from field with intention to land on [runway] xx. Multiple airplanes were announcing taxi and/or departure intentions; and not sure if this particular aircraft departed ZZZ to the northeast or was transiting. [We] never heard a radio call from aircraft even after the near miss. Unable to copy tail number as aircraft was behind us and to the right by the time we realized how close of a call it was.
